Are you thinking of installing retaining walls by yourself?
Retaining walls are not difficult to install by yourself. However, there are some important considerations that need to taken into account prior to starting a DIY project. Poorly planned retaining wall projects can lead to drainage problems as well as walls that may collapse if the foundation is poor. So here are the top four building instructions we can give.
- Wall height considerations
If you’re planning on building a retaining wall on sloping earth, and require a wall that’s taller than 1.2 metres, you will need to consult a structural engineer on the mechanics of how to properly erect such a wall. The pressures associated with wet earth and walls higher than 1.2 metres can cause walls to collapse if proper structural care has not been taken into consideration. - Foundation requirements
This seems basic enough, but we have seen walls that have poor foundations and this has led to many problems for the homeowners. Foundations should be firm to avoid walls destabilizing and potential crack of mortar. If your wall is made of stone, you should use large rocks to establish a footing. For concrete and brick block walls, ensure a concrete footing has been set under them. If the ground freezes in the place you live, you’ll need to consult with your local building inspectors to find out where the frost line is so you can lay a foundation that’s suitable. - Retaining wall materials
Do you know what material your retaining wall will be made of? Have you found out the advantages and disadvantages of each of these materials? Retaining walls come in a variety of materials from concrete, brick, stone, interlocking blocks and timber. If you’re looking for the cheapest option, timber might be it, but its disadvantage is that it is subject to cracking and rotting if you have failed to properly install a drainage system. Stone and concrete walls tend to be the most stable, while interlocking blocks may crack if the drainage system is also not adequate. - Develop a layout plan
Before heading out to install your retaining wall, it’s good to know how you intend on laying the wall. What does your landscape look like? Where exactly do you plan on placing the wall? Are there any curves you need to work with? Or any obstructing features? Take all these things into consideration, don’t avoid curves in the land, work with them, you can produce some really awesome results.
